Aquatic Biology

The Aquatics program is only one of two programs of this type in the State of Indiana. The program was established to investigate and evaluate the biological communities in the St. Joseph and Elkhart Rivers and their tributaries. While conventional monitoring is good at identifying the chemical and microbial components of the water being tested, it provides little information about the condition of the aquatic communities that it is also intended to protect. To date, 84 different species of fish have been identified within the St. Joseph River watershed.
