Woodchips and Compost

 Bio-Solids Compost
The Elkhart Environmental Center serves as a site for citizens to obtain free bio-solids compost. Every fall and spring the Elkhart Street Department collects leaves from City residents. Over 25,000 cubic yards of leaves are turned into rich organic compost each year by mixing woodchips, leaves and bio-solids from the wastewater treatment plant. The end product is similiar to mil-organite, but is made locally!

Woodchipsgardening
The Elkhart Environmental Center in cojunction with the Forestry Division of the City of Elkhart offers free woodchips or mulch to the community. The mulch is created from woody yard waste from city residents, parks and right of ways. This program helps reduce the amount of yard waste entering the local landfill.

Mulch can be used for walking trails, flower and vegetable gardens, and other landscaping needs. It has another environmental benefit in that it conserves the amount of water needed for gardens by reducing evaporation and holding moisture in the soil.

These materials are located outside of our silver gate and are available Saturdays and Sundays from dawn to dusk and weekdays by chance. The materials is limited to a first come, first serve basis and you must bring your own loading equipment such as shovels and pitchforks.
