Elkhart is a vibrant city with nearly 52,000 residents living in some 16,000 residential units. We are located in North-Central Indiana, approximately one hundred nine (109) miles from Chicago, one hundred thirty-four (134) miles from Indianapolis and two hundred three miles (203) from Detroit. We are located near four federal highways and six state highways, and we are minutes away from the Elkhart Municipal Airport and the South Bend Regional Airport, connecting us to all parts of the world. Elkhart's business community encompasses a variety of industries such as manufactured housing, recreational vehicles, musical instruments and pharmaceuticals. Because of our strong manufacturing base, approximately 15,000 people from surrounding communities travel to Elkhart to work.

In addition, Elkhart has some fantastic public amenities. We have a state-of the-art ice rink, a water park, and newly renovated swimming pool. We also have our own beach and public golf course. All of these amenities make our community a great place to live.

Our City owned 85 year old Performing Arts Theatre is undergoing a complete $18 million dollar restoration. Our police force consists of 120 full time officers and a small reserve unit. The Fire Department consists of 120 full time fire fighters working in 6 district stations and one central location. We have two sister cities, one in England and one in Bulgaria. We exist on the main street of the Midwest the Indiana Toll Road and our exit is among the busiest on the system. We are within driving distance to access the Atlantic Ocean via our Indiana Harbor and 5 hours to the south is the Ohio River the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico. Universities in our City and the area include the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University South Bend/Elkhart, Goshen and Bethel College. We have bus service to Chicago O'Hare and the Chicago Midway Airports as well. We have the largest rail yard east of the Mississippi connecting to every major line in the country, and we are a City of diverse industry. The greater Elkhart area population is about 80,000. To provide the services, maintain the transportation system and infrastructure and all properties owned by the people the City employs nearly 600. We are therefore a great benefit to the local economy. We are something to be proud of.

Sincerely,
Dick Moore
Mayor
