Boot Lake Nature Preserve is a state dedicated nature preserve located in the northwest corner of Elkhart County.  Once used as a dumping ground by the City of Elkhart's Wastewater Treatment Plant, Boot Lake has been transformed through recent years from an environmental liability to an ecological asset.  Today, Boot Lake Nature Preserve now fosters a native tallgrass prairie, an upland deciduous forest, and an emergent herbaceous wetland on approximately 226 acres.  Boot Lake Nature Preserve has approximately 4.5 miles of hiking trails winding through each habitat.
