The Elkhart Environmental Center serves as a site for citizens to obtain free compost. Every fall and spring the Elkhart Street Department collects leaves from City residents. Over 25,000 cubic yards of leaves are turned into rich organic compost each year. The compost is available outside the silver gates of the Elkhart Environmental Center on a first come, first serve basis. They are available Saturday and Sundays from dawn to dusk and weekdays by chance when staff is on site. The materials are free to homeowners and much be loaded yourself. Please bring your own shovels, pitchforks and loading equipment.
No yard waste is allowed to be dropped off. Items are brought to the Environmental Center strictly by city departments. For leave pickup, please contact the Street Department at 293-5518 and for brush pickup up call the foresters at 295-PARK.
