The pharmaceutical industry has provided many jobs for Elkhart residents, thanks in large part to the efforts of Dr. Franklin Miles.  In 1884, Dr. Miles launched the Miles Medical Company in Elkhart, which in later decades produced products like Alka-Seltzer and One-A-Day vitamins.  Above, his staff of 1892 stands before their building on Franklin Street.

Speedy Alka-Seltzer" appeared in many advertisements over the years.
 Alka-Seltzer, a product of Miles Laboratories, was produced in Elkhart.
 
 
Elkhart has long been a manufacturing center for trailers, RVs, mobile homes and manufactured housing.
