Urban Wood Utilization Program

Urban Wood Utilization Program

The Elkhart Environmental Center and the City's Forestry Division are partnering to bring a new kind of program to the Elkhart community. While most of the trees and limbs that are removed in the City are only suitable for firewood or wood chips, there is a small fraction of these logs suitable for furniture, art and other "value-added" products. The Elkhart community has sawyers, woodworkers and other individuals who could put this wood to good use. That's the basis of this new program.

Urban woodwood that comes from trees in an urban setting, such as park trees, backyard trees, and street trees, which were not harvested for their timber value. Examples include logs from tree removals and trees killed by storm or pest outbreaks, such as the emerald ash borer (EAB).

What is available?
High-quality logs that are taken down in the city are available in limited quantities for milling and woodworking. Species, length and DIB vary. The majority of logs are 8 ft. in length or larger. Currently the most abundant wood species available is ash, but this fluctuates. To find out what's currently available or set up an appointment, call the EEC at 574-293-5070.

Why choose ElkhartWood?
Urban wood can still be used for a variety of purposes. Urban logs can be used to achieve green building standards such as LEED and count as "reclaimed urban lumber". In addition, when you choose to purchase Elkhart logs you are also supporting the community through direct funding of public tree plantings, support of local economy with unique raw materials, and education & outreach initiatives that enhance and strengthen the community. These trees are part of the stories and places of Elkhart!

Cost: Variable, but approximately $20 per log.

Who can purchase these logs?
The logs are sold as raw material in approximately 8 ft. log lengths and therefore these logs are available for purchase by individuals who have the means and capacity of properly transporting and utilizing them. This is not an opportunity to obtain firewood. To learn more about this program, please call the Elkhart Environmental Center at 574-293-5070 or contact the City Forester.
